The Rex in Ventnor, on the Isle of Wight, is a modern and relaxed form of dining fine, run by family team of the lovely humourous Abdel & talented Chef Ricardo. No pretentions, just excellently prepared tasty Italian food from the highest of culinary standards in our kitchens, served in a friendly style, with the best views of the headland of Ventnor Bay!
The Rex as it is today is an Art Deco styled building overlooking the sea from a prominent cliff location in Ventnor, opposite St Catherine's Church. It sits on the site which once held the Rex Cinema that many of the local community still remember fondly. Built in about 2003, the current Kingsview building of luxury appartments houses The Rex Restaurant with its unrivalled views over Ventnor Bay and miles of the IW coastline from its two tiered balcony. Originally styled as a piano bar with black shiny tables, rattan furniture and a creatively swirling bar, The Rex Italian Restaurant is fresh, whilst retaining a deco feel with rustic and coastal ambiance and is excellent in all weathers.

Quite possibly the best meal out of the holiday!
Found out about the Rex via trusty TripAdvisor so thanks to all who had reviewed here before. Bimbled in here with Flaps74 (review already written I see - hands up, you beat me!) and 13 other experienced eaters and had a cracking evening! Having had an accidentally late lunch earlier in the afternoon I wasn't confident I would manage a typically sized dinner, but manage I did (we all did to be fair) given the quality of the food. The children and some adults had pizzas and calzone and all were highly complimentary; I sampled the crusts with my pasta (penne arrabiata) and they were fab. Between the others a range of pollo al fungi, penne amatriciana and carbonara were all sampled and everyone was very happy. There was a pianist on duty who added a great deal of entertainment to the evening's proceedings and the service from greeting, seating, ordering, serving and wishing farewells was very friendly and efficient without being intrusive. If you're looking to go in a smaller group on a fine day then make sure you book ahead for a balcony table (photo attached) as it must be one of the best located restaurants on the island. Thank you for a great evening!
A table for 4, with the best views high up over the sea. A none pretentious menu with a good varied selection was perfect, superbly served and delicious. All done by a new and very up and coming young chef. We are well dined and replete in the finest of restaurants at very competitve prices - especially on the Island. This is highly recommended. Faultless, good presentation. The starters, mains and deserts are of a high standard. My fillet steak was perfect, the dessert was highly memorable and the wine list of a good standard. We ate in comfort and with efficient service. Having dined in the best restaurants on the Island the Rex is one I'm very comfortable to recommend and revisit.
